The Recorder of Deeds files and records documents affecting real property in the territory, including deeds, mortgages, personal liens and tax liens, under the supervision of the Lieutenant Governor. The office has two districts, and this one serves St. Thomas and St. John. The Lieutenant Governor's contact page places it in Suite 1B on the lower level of the Nisky Center. When a home changes hands, the deed and any mortgage are recorded here, and the office's online portal lets the public search recorded documents. Electronic recording through CSC and Simplifile is limited to miscellaneous documents such as releases of mortgage, easements and leases, while original deeds and mortgages must be submitted to the office directly. The e-recording notice says documents are processed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding government holidays.
