The Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture, through its Veterinary Services division, sets the entry rules for animals arriving in the territory, and its animal import page is the official source for anyone moving with a dog or cat. Direct travel from the U.S. mainland or Puerto Rico counts as domestic. For those trips, an accredited veterinarian must examine the pet and issue a health certificate that shows current rabies vaccination. The import page asks for a certificate issued within 10 days of arrival, while the visitor page allows up to 30 days depending on the state, so confirm the window with the office. The certificate should be emailed to Veterinary Services at least one business day before you land. Animals that are not current on rabies can be quarantined at the owner's expense. Travel from anywhere else, including the British Virgin Islands, is treated as international, and the department asks travelers to contact it first. The department has offices on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John.
