Estate Mount Washington is a privately owned 18th-century plantation on St. Croix's West End, and its restored great house is the owners' home. GoToStCroix says the owners let visitors walk the ruins and a stone labyrinth in daylight; no dated, current source confirms this, so treat any visit as a courtesy. A cotton plantation from the 1750s and a sugar estate in the 1800s, it covered 160 acres at its height, with a rum factory, mills, cisterns, a bell tower and a village of 17 cottages for enslaved workers. A hurricane destroyed the great house in 1899 and another struck in 1916; the overgrown ruins were rediscovered in 1984, and the house has been lived in again since 1986. A former owner, Nancy Ayer, built the Chartres-style labyrinth of local stone and coral. Park on site, take nothing, including fruit, carry out your trash and stay on the signed paths.
