Christiansted National Historic Site preserves Danish colonial buildings on the Christiansted waterfront, including Fort Christiansvaern, the Danish Customs House, the Scale House, the Danish West India and Guinea Company Warehouse and the Steeple Building. Established in 1952, it was the first National Park Service unit in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and it tells the story of Danish rule from 1734 to 1917. Christiansted was the capital of the Danish West Indies during the sugar era. Fort Christiansvaern is open daily and charges an entrance fee for visitors 16 and older, paid by card only, and the fort's parking lot has a separate fee. The fort also serves as the information point for Buck Island Reef National Monument. For anyone living in or near Christiansted, the site is a practical first stop for learning the island's history.
