Fort Frederik, Frederiksted

Fort Frederik is the Danish fort at the north end of the Frederiksted waterfront, built from 1752 to 1760 to guard the harbor. A National Historic Landmark, it saw the first reported salute by a foreign power to a U.S. ship in 1776, the 1848 emancipation revolt and the 1878 Fireburn. Restored to its 1780 look in 1976, it is now a history museum run by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), with galleries around a brick courtyard and an emancipation exhibition, 'Tides of Freedom'. As of October 2026, DPNR lists it as open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with admission of $10 for adults and $5 for children, and Virgin Islands students free. GoToStCroix adds Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m., and cruise ship days, and gives admission as $5, with children 16 and under free. Park on Strand Street or across from the fort.
