Annaberg Sugar Plantation, in Virgin Islands National Park, preserves a Danish colonial estate above Leinster Bay that was one of St. John's biggest sugar producers by the early 1800s, also making molasses and rum. More than 600 enslaved Africans lived and worked here. A self-guided trail passes the windmill tower, the animal mill, the sugar factory and the enslaved people's quarters. The site is at the end of a spur road off North Shore Road. The path up from the lot is steep and rocky, too steep for wheelchairs, then fairly flat among the buildings; the park suggests one to two hours. Entry is free. Friends of Virgin Islands National Park cultural ambassadors demonstrate bread making and island plants from November to June. Drones need the park's written permission. In February 2026, local news reported three interpretive signs about slavery and the 1733 revolt missing from the trail.
