Altona Lagoon Beach is a public beach on Altona Lagoon, just east of downtown Christiansted near Gallows Bay; the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation (DSPR) lists it as Altona Lagoon/Little Bay Beach. The lagoon's main entrance is off Mt. Welcome Road. The adjoining Altona Lagoon community park has a playground, an outdoor fitness park with free classes, walking paths, shaded picnic tables, a boat ramp and parking. The calm lagoon suits kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling, and it is one of St. Croix's two bioluminescent bays, seen on guided kayak tours. In July 2026 the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) bought 4.77 acres of lagoon shoreline next to the park to widen public access. DPNR tests the water weekly at New Fort (Fort Louise Augusta), beside the lagoon; it failed the bacteria standard on October 16, 2026, and met it on October 30; check the latest advisory.
