Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority, St. Thomas

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority, or VIWMA, handles household trash, landfills and wastewater in the territory, and its St. Thomas office is at Estate Bovoni. On St. Thomas, household waste goes either to one of 22 disposal sites, known as bin sites, or out to the curb in neighborhoods with house-to-house collection, and it ends up at the Bovoni Landfill. Since June 1, 2026, homes with house-to-house collection must use a trash cart of no more than 64 gallons with two handles and a lid that closes, and crews may refuse carts that do not comply. VIWMA sells approved carts at the Bovoni Business Center, or residents can buy compliant carts from local retailers. Owners of apartment buildings with four or more units must hire a private hauler. The landfills refuse items such as tires, electronics, used motor oil and hazardous chemicals, so ask VIWMA where to take them.
