Around St. John

Trunk Bay, St. John
Cruz Bay, St. John
Cruz Bay, St. John

The Reef Bay Trail descends about 3 miles one way in Virgin Islands National Park, from Centerline Road near mile marker 5 to Reef Bay, under some of the island's oldest and tallest trees and past four ruined sugar estates. A side trail at mile 1.6 leads to a waterfall, strongest in the rainy season, beside rock carvings attributed to the Taino. At the bottom stands the Reef Bay sugar factory, St. John's last working mill until a fatal accident in 1908, its steam engine largely intact. The park rates the hike strenuous, steep, rocky and slippery even when dry; bring sturdy shoes, water, lunch and insect repellent. The park's time estimates vary: two to three and a half hours down to the valley floor, and longer for the 900-foot climb out. In season, a paid guided hike with Friends of Virgin Islands National Park returns by boat, weather permitting.
