The St. Thomas Historical Trust is a nonprofit with a museum and office on Raadets Gade in Charlotte Amalie that runs guided history tours. Its Downtown Walking Tour leaves the museum on Thursdays at 9 am and takes two to three hours, covering sites such as Fort Christian, the Grand Hotel, Frederick Lutheran Church, the 99 Steps, Hotel 1829, Government House, the post office WPA murals and the warehouse district. Its Hassel Island Tour starts at the museum, crosses the harbor by boat from the Charlotte Amalie waterfront and visits the Garrison House, two batteries and the Signal Station on moderate hiking trails. Both tours are booked online through Eventbrite. The downtown walk needs 48 hours' notice and takes groups of 2 to 15. The museum and office are open on weekday mornings. For newcomers, the downtown walk is a practical introduction to the historic district.
