The Elaine Ione Sprauve Library is St. John's public library, in Cruz Bay, run by the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. It reopened on October 31, 2026, after nearly two years closed, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It stands on the site of the Estate Enighed great house, built around the 1750s; the rebuilt building opened as the library in 1982 and honors island educator Elaine Sprauve. A steep outdoor 'welcoming arms' staircase climbs to the top-floor main entrance and general collection. One floor down, with its own ramp and accessible entrance, the Caribbean collection holds rare local books, a crafts display and newspaper microfiche (staff were still seeking a reader at the reopening). Children's books are on the lowest level. There are six public computers, and library cards include the Hoopla digital library.
