Blackbeard's Castle is a privately run hilltop attraction and boutique hotel above Charlotte Amalie, built around Skytsborg, a watchtower the Danes put up in 1679 to guard the harbor and Fort Christian. The tower is a National Historic Landmark; the pirate name comes from legend. After years closed for repairs, the site is open again, though some Department of Tourism pages still call it closed. As of October 2026, general admission is $15 per person and covers the self-guided climb up the tower's 36 stairs, the grounds with their life-size pirate statues and harbor lookouts, the pool and a tasting in the Rum Room. The tower, Rum Room and gift shop open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last tower admission at 4:30 p.m., and Jolly Roger's pool bar and restaurant stays open until 9 p.m. The 99 Steps are the most direct walk up from downtown.
