Drake's Seat is a hilltop lookout above Magens Bay on the north side of St. Thomas, named for the legend that Sir Francis Drake watched for Spanish ships from this spot. The view takes in Magens Bay and the neighboring islands, toward the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea, and the Department of Tourism calls it one of the island's most photographed places. A green bench added in the 1930s seats up to four people for photos. Tourism suggests stopping on the drive back from Magens Bay, or arriving before dawn to watch the sun rise over the bay. The pages we checked list no admission charge, facilities or parking. A 2024 op-ed history of Magens Bay in the St. Thomas Source says the deed of conveyance forbade commercial use of Drake's Seat.
