The St. Thomas Synagogue is the home of the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas and, by the congregation's account, the oldest synagogue building in continuous use under the American flag and the second oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Sephardic Jewish families founded the congregation in 1796, and the present building was dedicated in 1833 after fires destroyed earlier ones. It is a National Historic Landmark, known for its sand floor, mahogany pews made by shipbuilders and a domed ceiling. The Weibel Memorial Museum in the back foyer tells the history of the island's Jewish community. The synagogue is open to visitors Monday to Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Staff give free tours during those hours; donations are welcome. First-time visitors must show a photo ID at the gate. It is a Reform congregation with Friday evening services.
