Around East End, St. John
Hansen Bay is a beach on St. John's East End, near the end of Centerline Road, with neighboring Saltwell Bottom beach just around the corner. Both lie below private land, and the owners decide whether visitors may cross it: the territory's Open Shorelines Act protects use of the shore, not passage over private property. In January 2020, News of St. John reported that the owners had opened both beaches with free parking and no fee, that Hansen offered chairs, benches, portable restrooms and kayak and paddleboard rentals, and that Saltwell Bottom sits closer to the snorkeling at Pelican Rock. A January 2023 post still listed both, and in April 2025 Hansen Bay offered free parking for a yacht club event. Vie's Snack Shack, which charged $2.50 for beach access in 2016, closed that October. No current source confirms access, cost or facilities, so check locally before going.
