La Reine Chicken Shack is a long-running local restaurant in Estate La Reine, near Kingshill in the middle of St. Croix, on Route 75 near Centerline Road. It is known for its spit-roasted chicken, which the tourism department says has drawn diners since 1956. The tourism department also mentions ribs, johnny cakes and a daily changing menu of other Caribbean dishes, served in a wood-paneled dining room, on a covered patio or at picnic tables, or packed to go, with a full bar; it advises arriving early, before the food sells out. The restaurant opens at 11 a.m. from Monday to Saturday, closing at 7 p.m. from Monday to Wednesday and at 8 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday. Sources disagree about Sunday, so call before a Sunday visit. The restaurant posts daily notes about kitchen hours on its Facebook page.
