Equus Rides runs guided horseback rides on St. Croix's north shore, led by Cowboy Steve. Riders meet at Off The Wall restaurant at the east end of Cane Bay and drive along North Shore Road to the horses; those without a car can ride along. The route crosses a pasture past a sugar mill and the Danish ruins at Rust Op Twist, then follows the beach into the sea, where the horses swim with their riders. The group ride takes about two and a half hours, including basic instruction and one to one and a half hours in the saddle; private rides for up to six run three hours or more. All ages and experience levels are welcome, and the 220-pound weight limit is strictly enforced. Wear closed-toe or water shoes and clothes that can get wet. Local residents, military members and seniors 60 and older get 15 percent off.
